Garbage Disposals

Garbage Disposals

Is there anything more frustrating than a clogged sink when you're in the middle of meal prep? When that happens, the last thing you want is a kitchen full of leftovers that won’t go away. At Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we understand the importance of a functional garbage disposal in keeping your kitchen efficient and clean. Whether you need garbage disposal installation in Savannah, GA, or a quick repair, we’ve got you covered. Keep reading to learn about the essentials of maintaining your garbage disposal and knowing when it might be time for a replacement.

Signs Your Garbage Disposal May Need a Repair or Replacement

Garbage disposals are built to last, but like any appliance, they have their limits. Knowing about the early signs of trouble can help you decide whether a garbage disposal repair in Savannah is sufficient or if it's time for a replacement.

Garbage Disposals
  • Frequent Clogs: If your disposal clogs often, it could be due to worn-out blades or improper usage. Frequent clogs are a clear sign that your disposal is struggling, especially if it’s clogging on foods it used to handle easily.
  • Unusual Noises: Grinding noises, rattling, or humming sounds often indicate that something is wrong. This could mean there’s an object stuck in the disposal or that internal components, such as the blades or motor, are damaged.
  • Persistent Odors: A lingering bad smell can mean food is trapped inside the disposal or the unit isn’t functioning properly. If cleaning doesn’t eliminate the odor, it might be time for a garbage disposal replacement.
  • Leaking: Leaks can lead to more severe water damage if left unaddressed. If your disposal is leaking from the bottom, it’s a sign that the unit itself is failing.
  • Poor Performance: If your disposal takes longer to grind food or struggles with smaller amounts, the blades may be dull, or the motor may be weakening.

If you notice any of these signs, it’s best to speak with a professional to determine the best course of action, whether it's a simple garbage disposal repair in Savannah or a full replacement.

How to Properly Maintain Your Garbage Disposal

Proper maintenance is an important part of extending the life of your garbage disposal and ensuring it operates efficiently. Here are some straightforward tips to keep your disposal in great shape:

  • Run it Regularly: Even if you don’t have food waste to grind, running your disposal regularly with cold water helps keep all its parts moving and prevents rust and corrosion.
  • Clean with Ice and Citrus: Grinding ice cubes can sharpen your blades and clean the inside. Adding citrus peels not only helps with sharpening but also leaves your disposal smelling fresh.
  • Flush with Water: Always use plenty of cold water when running your disposal. Cold water solidifies any grease or oils so that they are chopped up before reaching your trap.
  • Use Baking Soda and Vinegar: For deeper cleaning, pour baking soda and vinegar down the disposal, let it fizz for a few minutes, and then rinse with hot water. This helps remove build-up and odors.
  • Avoid Overloading: Feed waste gradually into the disposal to prevent overload. Overloading can cause clogs and motor strain.

What Not to Put Down Your Garbage Disposal to Avoid Damage

While garbage disposals are designed to handle many types of food waste, there are certain things that can cause significant damage if put down the drain. To avoid needing a garbage disposal replacement in Savannah, keep these items out of your unit:

Josiah was our plumber from Mr. Rooter. He was the best! Not only did he arrive on time, he handled everything we needed to replace our kitchen faucets and some pipes in a timely manner. We held our dogs at bay outside; he assured us they, all 4 of them, would not be a problem since it was hot out back. We let them in and they fell in love with Josiah. We appreciate his care and concern for us seniors and will certainly request him again when we need a plumber. Donna and Jeff Youngblood

Made a call to request service for a leaking garbage disposal system. The phone line went down and I gave them a 1 star review thinking they dropped the call. It was just poor phone signal. They called back and apologized even though it was not their fault. (This just shows they are ready to give you good service.) They came and fixed my garbage disposal in no time. Good people. Great service. I thought I deleted my 1 start review. Apologies that it took sometime for me to make this update. Thank you Mr. Rooter.

Joe really helped me out! Had my whole house backing up and after snaking the drains through a toilet hole he determined the best course of action was the hydro blast the main line, which required a cleanout to be installed. He dug up the line, installed the cleanout, and blasted out the clog all in one day. Pricing was fair and they even honored my membership discount from some work I had done by Mr. Electric (also a Neighborly company) a couple years ago. I will definitely be calling Mr. Rooter again if I have any other plumbing problems!

I had a water emergency over the Easter holiday, called several "24 hour" plumbers and none of them bothered to help me except ONE. Mr Rooter sent Josiah to repair my broken pipe and install a new HOSE bibb that caused the emergency. He was very professional and efficient, and got the repair completed quickly. While it cost more than a normal job, I was lucky to find him on short notice on a holiday. Thanks to Mr Rooter my Easter weekend wasn't a TOTAL WASH OUT!! (pun intended)

Felix and Will saved the day! (And our new old house.) I had a competitor company come out to help us with some seriously backed up plumbing. (They snaked one drain and then said the only solution was to reroute our plumbing to the main line, a 4-6k cost!). I called Mr. Rooter for a second opinion. They arrived exactly on time, listened to our issues, worked with our contractor who was there to help, and they were able to clear our entire home’s plumbing in a couple of hours and for less than $400! Felix and Will were polite, patient, and took extra time to make sure every drain in our house was working properly before they left. I’m so grateful. We will definitely keep getting our plumbing maintenanced by this crew. Thank you!!

  • Grease and Oils: These substances solidify when they cool, causing clogs in your pipes and sticking to the blades of your disposal.
  • Fibrous Foods: Foods like celery, asparagus, corn husks, and onion skins have fibrous strands that can wrap around blades, which causes them to jam.
  • Hard Objects: Avoid putting bones, fruit pits, or other hard items down the disposal. These can dull or break the blades and damage the motor.
  • Starchy Foods: Foods like rice, potatoes, and pasta expand when exposed to water and can form a paste that clogs your disposal and pipes.
  • Non-Food Items: This may seem obvious, but never put non-food items, such as plastic, metal, or glass, into your garbage disposal.

DIY vs. Professional Garbage Disposal Installations

If you’re in need of a new garbage disposal, you might be wondering whether to install it yourself or hire a professional. There are several reasons why opting for a professional garbage disposal installation in Savannah might be the better choice.

  • Expertise and Experience: Professional plumbers have the skills and experience to handle installations efficiently and correctly. They know how to connect plumbing and electrical components safely.
  • Proper Sizing and Compatibility: A professional can help you choose the right disposal that fits your sink and plumbing system. They can also advise on the best model based on your household’s needs and waste habits.
  • Time and Convenience: Garbage disposal installation can be time-consuming, especially if you’re not familiar with the process. Hiring professionals saves you time and makes sure the job is done right the first time.
  • Safety: Handling plumbing and electrical work can be dangerous if you’re not trained. Professionals have the right tools and knowledge to complete the installation safely, minimizing the risk of injury or damage to your home.

Frequently Asked Question

At Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Savannah, we understand that you may have questions about our services or how your plumbing system works. Here are some common questions we have been asked:

Why is my faucet leaking?

A leaking faucet is often due to worn-out washers, O-rings, or seals within the faucet assembly. While these issues can usually be fixed with simple repairs, ignoring them can lead to higher water bills and further damage over time.

How long do water heaters typically last?

The average lifespan of a water heater is 8 to 12 years. Maintenance tasks like flushing your tank and checking the anode rod will help to extend its life.

What should I do if I smell some gas near my water heater?

If you smell any gas near your water heater, it’s important to leave the area immediately and contact your emergency services and your gas company. Don't try to fix a gas leak on your own, because it can be extremely dangerous.

How do I know if my sump pump is working properly?

To ensure your sump pump is functioning, test it by pouring some water into the sump pit. The pump should activate and remove the water. Regular maintenance checks, especially before rainy seasons, can prevent malfunctions when you need the pump most.

Are there any benefits to routine drain cleaning?

Regular drain cleaning prevents clogs, reduces foul odors, and maintains the health of your plumbing system. It can also extend the lifespan of your pipes and help prevent unexpected plumbing emergencies.
