Sump Pump Replacement

A basement flood can quickly damage valuable belongings and put your property at serious risk. That's why having a reliable sump pump is so critical. But what happens if your sump pump stops working as it should? At Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we can help keep your home safe from water damage. Whether you need a sump pump repair or a complete sump pump replacement in Savannah, Georgia, we're here to help you make the best choice for your home.

How to Know When Your Sump Pump Needs Replacing

Sump pumps won't last forever, and there are clear signs that yours might be on its last legs. Recognizing these signs early enough can help save you from water damage. So, how do you know when it's time for a sump pump replacement?

Sump Pump Replacement
  • Age: The average sump pump lasts about 7-10 years. If yours is getting up there in age, it might be time to consider a replacement, especially if you've noticed performance issues.
  • Strange Noises: Grinding, rattling, or excessive vibrations can indicate that parts inside your sump pump are worn out or damaged. While some issues might be fixed with a repair, persistent noises often mean it's time for a new unit.
  • Frequent Cycling: If your sump pump frequently turns on and off, even when it’s not raining, it could be due to a problem with the float switch or a wrong-sized pump for your basin. This is a common issue that could require a sump pump installation.
  • Constant Running: If your sump pump never stops running, it may not have the capacity to handle the amount of water entering your sump pit, or there could be an electrical issue. Either way, a sump pump replacement might be your best bet to avoid overworking your pump and risking a breakdown.
  • Visible Rust or Corrosion: This can be caused by bacteria reacting with iron in the water. While this doesn't always mean the pump is failing, it can be a sign that your sump pump isn't working as efficiently as it should be.

By paying attention to these signs, you can decide whether it's time for a sump pump repair or a full replacement. If you're ever in doubt, Mr. Rooter Plumbing can help you assess your sump pump's condition and recommend the best course of action.

The Benefits of Upgrading to a High-Capacity Sump Pump

If you're considering a sump pump replacement, it might be a good idea to upgrade to a high-capacity model. Here's why:

  • Better Performance During Heavy Rain: A high-capacity sump pump can handle a much larger volume of water, which is especially beneficial during periods of heavy rainfall or rapid snowmelt. This upgrade reduces the risk of your pump being overwhelmed and your basement flooding.
  • Increased Longevity: High-capacity pumps are designed to handle more strain, which means they're less likely to burn out under heavy use. This makes them a more durable and long-term investment compared to standard models.
  • Enhanced Reliability: Upgraded sump pumps often come with additional features like battery backup systems, alarms, or smart technology integrations that notify you of potential issues before they lead to flooding.
  • Peace of Mind: Knowing that your sump pump can handle even the worst storms gives you peace of mind, especially if you've experienced basement flooding in the past. Investing in a high-capacity sump pump is one of the best ways to protect your home from water damage.

While a repair can be a quick fix for minor issues, upgrading to a high-capacity sump pump during your sump pump installation in Savannah can provide superior protection for your home.

Reviews

Josiah was our plumber from Mr. Rooter. He was the best! Not only did he arrive on time, he handled everything we needed to replace our kitchen faucets and some pipes in a timely manner. We held our dogs at bay outside; he assured us they, all 4 of them, would not be a problem since it was hot out back. We let them in and they fell in love with Josiah. We appreciate his care and concern for us seniors and will certainly request him again when we need a plumber. Donna and Jeff Youngblood

Made a call to request service for a leaking garbage disposal system. The phone line went down and I gave them a 1 star review thinking they dropped the call. It was just poor phone signal. They called back and apologized even though it was not their fault. (This just shows they are ready to give you good service.) They came and fixed my garbage disposal in no time. Good people. Great service. I thought I deleted my 1 start review. Apologies that it took sometime for me to make this update. Thank you Mr. Rooter.

Joe really helped me out! Had my whole house backing up and after snaking the drains through a toilet hole he determined the best course of action was the hydro blast the main line, which required a cleanout to be installed. He dug up the line, installed the cleanout, and blasted out the clog all in one day. Pricing was fair and they even honored my membership discount from some work I had done by Mr. Electric (also a Neighborly company) a couple years ago. I will definitely be calling Mr. Rooter again if I have any other plumbing problems!

I had a water emergency over the Easter holiday, called several "24 hour" plumbers and none of them bothered to help me except ONE. Mr Rooter sent Josiah to repair my broken pipe and install a new HOSE bibb that caused the emergency. He was very professional and efficient, and got the repair completed quickly. While it cost more than a normal job, I was lucky to find him on short notice on a holiday. Thanks to Mr Rooter my Easter weekend wasn't a TOTAL WASH OUT!! (pun intended)

Felix and Will saved the day! (And our new old house.) I had a competitor company come out to help us with some seriously backed up plumbing. (They snaked one drain and then said the only solution was to reroute our plumbing to the main line, a 4-6k cost!). I called Mr. Rooter for a second opinion. They arrived exactly on time, listened to our issues, worked with our contractor who was there to help, and they were able to clear our entire home’s plumbing in a couple of hours and for less than $400! Felix and Will were polite, patient, and took extra time to make sure every drain in our house was working properly before they left. I’m so grateful. We will definitely keep getting our plumbing maintenanced by this crew. Thank you!!

How Sump Pump Replacement Can Prevent Basement Flooding

Basement flooding can damage your home’s foundation, not to mention the destruction of personal belongings and potential mold growth. A sump pump is your home’s best defense against flooding, and replacing an old or malfunctioning pump can make a massive difference.

  • Efficient Water Removal: A new sump pump ensures efficient water removal from your basement, keeping your home dry even during heavy rainfall. Modern pumps are designed to activate as soon as water levels start to rise, quickly draining excess water away from your home.
  • Improved Reliability: Newer sump pumps are built with the latest technology and will reduce the likelihood of mechanical failures. This means less downtime and fewer worries about whether your pump will work when you need it most.
  • Reduced Risk of Costly Repairs: Preventing basement flooding protects your home and saves you from more expensive repairs associated with water damage. From ruined carpets to damaged drywall, the cost of repairs can quickly add up. A new sump pump installation in Savannah will help you save more money.
  • Protects Your Home’s Value: Keeping your basement dry is critical for maintaining your home's value. A history of water damage can decrease your property's value and appeal to potential buyers. Regular sump pump maintenance and timely replacement are key to protecting your investment.

How to Maintain Your New Sump Pump for Long-Term Reliability

Once you've invested in a new sump pump, routine maintenance is central to making sure that it remains reliable for years to come. Here are some helpful tips to keep your sump pump in good condition:

  • Regular Testing: Test the sump pump every couple of months by pouring a bucket of water into your sump pit. The pump should activate, drain the water, and shut off automatically. If it doesn't, you might need a repair or adjustment.
  • Inspect the Discharge Pipe: Ensure that the discharge pipe is free of debris and directed away from your home’s foundation. Blocked or improperly placed discharge pipes can lead to water flowing back into your basement.
  • Check the Power Source: Make sure your sump pump is plugged into a GFCI outlet and that the cord is in good condition. Power failures can render your pump useless during critical times, so consider installing a battery backup system for added security.
  • Clean the Sump Pit: Over time, debris like dirt and small stones can accumulate in the sump pit, potentially clogging your pump. Clean the pit at least once a year or more often if you notice debris buildup.
  • Schedule Professional Inspections: Scheduling professional inspections can help to catch issues early and increase the life of your pump.

Frequently Asked Question

At Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Savannah, we understand that you may have questions about our services or how your plumbing system works. Here are some common questions we have been asked:

Why is my faucet leaking?

A leaking faucet is often due to worn-out washers, O-rings, or seals within the faucet assembly. While these issues can usually be fixed with simple repairs, ignoring them can lead to higher water bills and further damage over time.

How long do water heaters typically last?

The average lifespan of a water heater is 8 to 12 years. Maintenance tasks like flushing your tank and checking the anode rod will help to extend its life.

What should I do if I smell some gas near my water heater?

If you smell any gas near your water heater, it’s important to leave the area immediately and contact your emergency services and your gas company. Don't try to fix a gas leak on your own, because it can be extremely dangerous.

How do I know if my sump pump is working properly?

To ensure your sump pump is functioning, test it by pouring some water into the sump pit. The pump should activate and remove the water. Regular maintenance checks, especially before rainy seasons, can prevent malfunctions when you need the pump most.

Are there any benefits to routine drain cleaning?

Regular drain cleaning prevents clogs, reduces foul odors, and maintains the health of your plumbing system. It can also extend the lifespan of your pipes and help prevent unexpected plumbing emergencies.
