How to Deal with Water Hammer in Your Pipes

Have you ever heard a loud banging noise when you turn off a faucet or shut down an appliance like a dishwasher? That sound is known as a water hammer, and it's a common plumbing issue caused by a sudden stop or change in the flow of water through your pipes. Water hammer is annoying, but it can also be damaging. The pressure surge can lead to loose fittings, damaged valves, and, in severe cases, burst pipes. Ignoring it can result in an emergency plumbing repair in Garden City down the road. To address water hammer, it’s you'll first need to check your home’s water pressure, as excessive pressure can worsen the issue. Ideally, your home’s water pressure should be between 40 and 60 PSI. If it’s higher, consider installing a pressure-reducing valve. Another effective solution is the installation of a water hammer arrestor, which is a device that's designed to absorb the shock caused by sudden changes in water flow. For those who are not familiar with handling plumbing fixtures, it’s best to contact professional plumbers in Garden City.

Plumbing Solutions for High Water Usage Households

High water usage is a common concern for many households, especially those with large families, numerous appliances, or extensive landscaping needs. In commercial settings, such as restaurants or fitness centers, the demand for water can be even greater, leading to increased utility bills and strain on the plumbing system. If your household or business falls into this category, there are several plumbing solutions that can help you manage water use more effectively and reduce your overall consumption. One of the simplest ways to conserve water is by installing high-efficiency fixtures. For households with high water usage, switching to a tankless water heater can also help. Unlike traditional water heaters that maintain a large tank of hot water, tankless units heat water on demand, which often equates to substantial energy savings. Installing smart irrigation systems and rain sensors can also help manage outdoor water use more efficiently by preventing overwatering and reducing waste.

The Benefits of Upgrading Your Plumbing Pipes

Many homeowners and business owners don’t think about their plumbing pipes until something goes wrong. However, outdated or deteriorating pipes can cause a range of problems, from discolored water and low pressure to frequent leaks and unexpected bursts. Older properties, in particular, are often fitted with pipes made from materials like galvanized steel or cast iron, which are prone to rust and corrosion over time. Upgrading your plumbing pipes to modern materials can offer many benefits, including improved water quality, better flow, and enhanced durability. Copper and PEX are popular choices for plumbing upgrades. Copper pipes are strong and resistant to bacteria, so they are an excellent investment for any property. On the other hand, PEX pipes are flexible, easy to install, and resistant to minerals, which makes them suitable for a wide variety of residential and commercial applications. Another important aspect of upgrading your pipes is the environmental benefit. Modern piping materials are more sustainable and often require less energy to produce and transport. Plus, improved pipe efficiency can reduce water waste.

Spotting Early Signs of Plumbing Issues

Regular maintenance and inspections are vital, but knowing what to look for can empower you to take swift action. One of the most common signs of a plumbing problem is a slow drain, which can indicate a blockage forming in your pipes. Similarly, low water pressure could point to a leak or buildup within your plumbing system. Another red flag is an unexplained increase in your water bill, which often suggests a hidden leak. Water stains on ceilings, mold development, or the sound of running water when everything is turned off are also indicators that something may be amiss. In commercial properties, plumbing issues can disrupt business operations and even lead to potential loss of revenue and customer satisfaction. That’s why it’s important to have a reliable plumber in Garden City on speed dial for routine inspections as well as emergency situations.

Reviews

Josiah was our plumber from Mr. Rooter. He was the best! Not only did he arrive on time, he handled everything we needed to replace our kitchen faucets and some pipes in a timely manner. We held our dogs at bay outside; he assured us they, all 4 of them, would not be a problem since it was hot out back. We let them in and they fell in love with Josiah. We appreciate his care and concern for us seniors and will certainly request him again when we need a plumber. Donna and Jeff Youngblood

Made a call to request service for a leaking garbage disposal system. The phone line went down and I gave them a 1 star review thinking they dropped the call. It was just poor phone signal. They called back and apologized even though it was not their fault. (This just shows they are ready to give you good service.) They came and fixed my garbage disposal in no time. Good people. Great service. I thought I deleted my 1 start review. Apologies that it took sometime for me to make this update. Thank you Mr. Rooter.

Joe really helped me out! Had my whole house backing up and after snaking the drains through a toilet hole he determined the best course of action was the hydro blast the main line, which required a cleanout to be installed. He dug up the line, installed the cleanout, and blasted out the clog all in one day. Pricing was fair and they even honored my membership discount from some work I had done by Mr. Electric (also a Neighborly company) a couple years ago. I will definitely be calling Mr. Rooter again if I have any other plumbing problems!

I had a water emergency over the Easter holiday, called several "24 hour" plumbers and none of them bothered to help me except ONE. Mr Rooter sent Josiah to repair my broken pipe and install a new HOSE bibb that caused the emergency. He was very professional and efficient, and got the repair completed quickly. While it cost more than a normal job, I was lucky to find him on short notice on a holiday. Thanks to Mr Rooter my Easter weekend wasn't a TOTAL WASH OUT!! (pun intended)

Felix and Will saved the day! (And our new old house.) I had a competitor company come out to help us with some seriously backed up plumbing. (They snaked one drain and then said the only solution was to reroute our plumbing to the main line, a 4-6k cost!). I called Mr. Rooter for a second opinion. They arrived exactly on time, listened to our issues, worked with our contractor who was there to help, and they were able to clear our entire home’s plumbing in a couple of hours and for less than $400! Felix and Will were polite, patient, and took extra time to make sure every drain in our house was working properly before they left. I’m so grateful. We will definitely keep getting our plumbing maintenanced by this crew. Thank you!!

Frequently Asked Question

At Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Savannah, we understand that you may have questions about our services or how your plumbing system works. Here are some common questions we have been asked:

Why is my faucet leaking?

A leaking faucet is often due to worn-out washers, O-rings, or seals within the faucet assembly. While these issues can usually be fixed with simple repairs, ignoring them can lead to higher water bills and further damage over time.

How long do water heaters typically last?

The average lifespan of a water heater is 8 to 12 years. Maintenance tasks like flushing your tank and checking the anode rod will help to extend its life.

What should I do if I smell some gas near my water heater?

If you smell any gas near your water heater, it’s important to leave the area immediately and contact your emergency services and your gas company. Don't try to fix a gas leak on your own, because it can be extremely dangerous.

How do I know if my sump pump is working properly?

To ensure your sump pump is functioning, test it by pouring some water into the sump pit. The pump should activate and remove the water. Regular maintenance checks, especially before rainy seasons, can prevent malfunctions when you need the pump most.

Are there any benefits to routine drain cleaning?

Regular drain cleaning prevents clogs, reduces foul odors, and maintains the health of your plumbing system. It can also extend the lifespan of your pipes and help prevent unexpected plumbing emergencies.
